The Inside Scoop: Some Things Your Therapist Wants You To Know

Do you ever wonder what’s going on in your therapist’s mind during sessions? You’re not alone! While we’re fully focused on you—your thoughts, feelings, and the challenges you’re working through—there are a few things we’d love to say out loud. It’s not that we’re hiding anything; we just want to keep the spotlight on your progress. So, in the spirit of transparency, here are a few things your therapist wants you to know.

It’s Okay If You Don’t Know Where to Start

Feeling lost or overwhelmed at the start of therapy? That’s completely normal and okay. You don’t need to arrive with an agenda or a perfectly polished story. We’re here to help you sift through the chaos, and we can handle whatever you need to share. Whether you begin with “I’m really nervous to be here” or “I’ve had a rough week,” we’ll work through it together. Remember, every journey starts with a single step, and taking that step is what truly matters.

Therapy Is A Safe Space

We’re not here to criticize your life choices or keep track of how often you skip the gym for a few extra minutes of sleep. And we don’t judge you for taking a well-deserved self-care day from work—we’ve all been there! Therapy is a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can freely explore your thoughts and feelings. We aim to support you on your journey, not critique your decisions. You can feel safe sharing whatever’s on your mind, and rest assured that we take confidentiality very seriously. Your internal struggles are safe with us.

Feeling Better Takes Time

Therapy isn’t a “magical” fix. It’s a journey, and seeing progress takes time. However, there are inspiring moments when you notice the gradual changes that unfold along the way. It’s those moments when you think, “Wow, I handled that situation so much better than I would have a few months ago,” that you realize the magic! Stick with it and you will experience the positive feelings that happen through intentional self-exploration.

Your Progress Doesn’t Have to Be Linear

Some days, you might feel on top of the world, while other days may feel like you’re back where you started. That’s perfectly normal! Growth isn’t a straightforward journey; it’s more like a winding path that goes up and down. Celebrate the highs, be patient with the lows, and know that setbacks don’t erase your progress. Sometimes, the detours along the way can lead to the most meaningful insights.

Therapists Don’t Give Advice

Therapists don’t give direct advice or solutions—that’s not how we work. Instead, we help you learn coping strategies and guide you in developing insights into your patterns of behavior. By exploring your thoughts and feelings with curiosity, we seek to empower you to tackle challenges with increased confidence. Our goal is to help you build the skills needed to make choices that lead to lasting change.

Authenticity Is Appreciated

Contrary to what social media might show, nobody has it all figured out—not even us! Therapy is a place where you can talk about your struggles without needing to put on a mask of happiness. The reality is that being human isn’t easy. Therapy is all about learning to manage uncertainty, not trying to get rid of it. Remember, it’s okay to embrace the messiness of life as part of the journey.

Humor Is Welcome

Therapy doesn’t have to be serious all the time. If you’re ever tempted to make a joke in a therapy session, go for it! Humor is a great coping tool, and we welcome a good laugh. Sometimes, a little lightness is exactly what’s needed to move through tough moments.

It’s Not About Being “Fixed”

You’re not broken, and therapy isn’t about “fixing” you. It’s about helping you understand yourself better, manage life’s challenges, and build the tools you need to live more intentionally. Together, we can explore the answers that work for you, no matter how unclear things might seem at the start. Our job is to ask the right questions, help you reflect, and offer new perspectives.

Whether you’re facing a specific challenge or simply need someone to listen, therapy can be a powerful resource for anyone. Embracing the process is a step toward a more fulfilling and empowered life, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
